2006

This year we set up our first distribution node in the Aspettensiedlung,
which improved the connectivity of the FunkFeuer network in Perchtoldsdorf and the surrounding area.

For this purpose, the site of the radio amateur OE3EBA was extended.

At that time we used home-built helical antennas. These were used to link the FFH and HH10 sites. Over time, the hardware was replaced with that of the manufacturer Ubiquiti, with which we gained very good experience, and together with Bernhard we hosted our own firmware for the Ubiquiti antennas and implemented it with OLSR. When Ubiquiti prevented the building of custom firmware, we switched to EdgeRouter. Currently, many EdgeRouters are still running OLSR, along with a few Mikrotik devices running OLSR Docker containers.

2015 | Infrastructure Expansion & Backbone Connection (VIX)

In the course of continuous company growth, the relocation of the company from Perchtoldsdorf to Brunn am Gebirge was successfully completed in 2015. The new company headquarters offers the optimal logistical and infrastructural basis for the further expansion of our core competencies.

At the same time, in order to significantly increase network capacity, a dedicated fibre-optic infrastructure from ASFINAG was leased that year, terminating directly at the Vienna Internet eXchange (VIX) at the University of Vienna. This core component ensures a symmetric bandwidth of 1 Gbit/s for both upload and download for the Vienna South economic area and Lower Austria.

Physical signal distribution and range optimisation are carried out via a strategically positioned, likewise leased overhead gantry sign infrastructure belonging to ASFINAG, which is used as an antenna support.

Availability & Target Group Segmentation

Current network coverage and node data can be viewed in real time via the official FunkFeuer infrastructure map.

Operating and Usage Notice: > The provision of these specific network capacities is aimed exclusively at private individuals and at business customers who require a redundant backup line (disaster recovery / failover) to safeguard their primary internet connection.

2017 | Network Expansion and Site Extension

At the beginning of 2017, the strategic network node “Knoten Donau” was successfully commissioned, which significantly improved service quality, bandwidth availability and redundancy in the Brunn am Gebirge area.

As part of this infrastructure expansion, in close cooperation with the municipality, the use of the local fire station tower as a central distribution site was requested and approved. The technical implementation of the distribution station on the tower was successfully completed in the same year, significantly improving area-wide signal distribution and range in the target area. The fire brigade also receives free internet at full bandwidth from us, so the municipality's infrastructure costs are eliminated here as well.

2025 - Migration to Dark-Fibre Infrastructure

In 2025, the existing ASFINAG fibre-optic connection was successfully switched to a dedicated dark fibre line that terminates directly in the e-shelter (NTT Global Data Centers) data centre. This highly available point-to-point connection ensures a symmetric bandwidth of 10 Gbit/s for both upload and download for the Vienna South economic area and Lower Austria. Area-wide distribution is provided redundantly via the company's own mast infrastructure.

Work on our new mast began in 2025, as infrastructural changes at ASFINAG required certain adjustments. A site on our own land was found, and all submission documents and expert reports were prepared once we had defined an exact position with a neighbour and obtained his signature on the submission documents. From defining the position to the signature and submission, it unfortunately took months, as all of ASFINAG's expert reports and approvals repeatedly pushed the schedule back. Despite the bureaucratic obstacle course, we were finally able to submit in mid-December 2025. The material has been supplied for all reviews and expert reports and is now only awaiting final approval.

Continuous Data Centre Optimisation & Redundancy

The core infrastructure and the power supply of the company's own data centre have been modernised step by step in recent years and scaled to enterprise level:

  • Security Standard (since 2016): Implementation of seamless electronic access control including automated audit logging.

  • Resilience (UPS & Emergency Power): Comprehensive redundancy concept based on a combination of a 400 kWh battery storage system, a diesel-powered emergency generator and a supporting photovoltaic system.

Managed Services & Cloud Infrastructure

As a certified Veeam Cloud & Service Provider (VCSP) we offer highly secure cloud backup solutions with an exclusive data location in Austria. Our portfolio includes:

  • Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery: Optional hot-standby scenarios through continuous replication to our highly available Hyper-V cluster environment.

  • Seamless Network Integration: Direct Layer 2 connection of customer networks using VxLAN. This guarantees minimal switchover times (failover) and ensures the continuous availability of your familiar infrastructure.

Future Project: Digital Disaster Protection Brunn am Gebirge - www.ortsnetz.at

This year saw the start of a forward-looking disaster protection project to connect all municipal sites in Brunn am Gebirge:

  • Microwave Link Backbone: Construction of a high-performance microwave link network with bandwidths of up to 1 Gbit/s.

  • Crisis Resilience: The integration of sites with emergency power supply safeguards critical IT resources for disaster protection in a crisis.

  • Consolidation & Cost Efficiency: By centralising internet breakouts, telephone systems (VoIP) and firewall infrastructures, decentralised licence and operating costs at the individual sites are eliminated entirely.
